Hint — You Can’t Directly!

I have outlined the steps below to transfer your cryptocurrency of choice from Kucoin to Coinbase and then from Coinbase to your Ledger device.

Withdrawing from Kucoin to Coinbase

Login to Kucoin

  1. Click on the word “Login” in the upper right of the Kucoin home page.

2. Click on the tab with your choice of login, phone number, email, or QR Code. All three options require the same login password.

3. Click on a check box, confirming that you are not a robot.

4. If you selected “Trust this device for 30 days” during a previous successful login within the last 30 days, skip to step 8 in the Login to Kucoin section.

5. If you have previously set up two-factor authentication with the Google Authentication app on your phone, you can open the Google Authentication app on your phone and view the 2-factor authentication passcode for Kucoin. Finally, you can type this passcode into the form appearing on Kucoin’s web page. However, if you click on the SMS verification, Kucoin will text the passcode to your phone. The form prompt will ask for the 2-FA Code (two-factor authentication code) or the SMS Verification Code. Type this in the text field.

6. A picture selection challenge is used to ensure that you are not a robot. You will select all the images with crosswalks or ( numerous other objects), for example.

7. If it is unsuccessful, it will show the phrase, “Image selection unsuccessful.” and give you a new object to select among a group of images. Once successful, it will display the phrase “Successful!” and show the green checkmark in the check box for the prompt “I’m not a robot.”

8. You will then see Kucoin’s Main Accounts page.

Note: All the cryptocurrency that you will be able to withdraw has to be in the main account. Therefore, you may need to transfer some cryptocurrency from the trading account. If this is the case, follow the numbered directions below. Otherwise, move on to the next section titled, “Withdraw From Kucoin.”

Transferring Funds from Trading to Main Account in Kucoin

  1. Click on “Trading Account” in the top left.

2. Kucoin will display a list of numerous cryptocurrencies in your trading account. Near the top of the list should be cryptocurrencies that you have previously purchased or traded for in Kucoin.

3. Select the row with the cryptocurrency that you want to transfer into Kucoin’s Main Account. On the right side of that row, click on “Transfer.”

4. Type in the amount of the cryptocurrency that you want to transfer. You can also click on the blue number next to the “Available Amount:” prompt to transfer all of the cryptocurrency. Both choices result in an amount in the Amount text box.

5. Click the “Confirm” button to transfer the cryptocurrency to the main account.

Withdraw From Kucoin to Coinbase

In Kucoin I found out that you have to have a substantial sum to withdraw Bitcoin, but you have to have much less to withdraw XRP. So, I traded the Bitcoin for XRP so I could withdraw a small amount.

  1. Click on “Main Account” in the top left.

2. Select the cryptocurrency from the list that you wish to withdraw. In my case XRP.

3. In the same row as the cryptocurrency, click on “Withdraw” on the far right.

4. Keep the Browser tab open for Kucoin.

Warning: If you attempt to withdraw XRP from Kucoin, you will get a notice telling to please pay attention to whether the deposit address requires the Tag. In the case of tranferring to Coinbase it require a tag. Always put in a tag if one is given. You will need to get the tag from Coinbase later.

Log in to Coinbase

  1. Open a new browser tab. Type “https://www.coinbase.com" (without quotes) into the address bar. Then press return.

2. Click “Sign in” in the top right.

3. Click on the Email text box and type in your email address.

4. Press the tab button on the left side of the keyboard or click on the password text box below.

5. Type in your password.

6. Click on the SIGN IN button below the password text field.

7. Click on the check box next to the phrase, “I’m not a robot.”

8. In an image selection challenge, click each of the images shown with one or more of whichever object that you need to find. If you don’t see any of the objects in the images, click on the skip button. Then you will have to do the image selection challenge with another object. You will see the message “Successful!”, once your image selection task is completed correctly.

9. Enter the 2-step verification code from your authentication app on your phone. OR use the text that Coinbase sends to get the six-digit verification code.

Set Up Coinbase to Receive Cryptocurrency

  1. Click on the Send/Receive button in the top right.
  2. At the top of the dialog box that opens, click on the “Receive” tab.

3. Coinbase warns that you must select the right cryptocurrency or your cryptocurrency could be lost. Click on the I Understand button. For example, both an address and an XRP tag are required to receive XRP in Coinbase. (When in doubt always add a tag if one is given.)

4. Select the cryptocurrency (Asset) you want to receive from the drop-down list.

5. Next to the address, click on the copy icon. This action copies your Coinbase address for that particular cryptocurrency to the clipboard.

6. Click on the Kucoin tab on your browser to go back to Kucoin.

Go Back to Kucoin Tab on Browser

7. Click on the text field for the Wallet Address. Press command + V on mac or control + V on PC to paste the address that you copied from Coinbase into the text field.

8. Once you past the address, the Network text box should fill in with BTC.

Go back to Coinbase Tab in Browser

9. Click on the Coinbase tab on the browser.

10. Find the tag for the address. Click on the copy icon next to the tag text field.

Go back to Kucoin Again

11. Click on the Kucoin Tab on the browser.

12. Click on the tag text field.

13. Press command + V on Mac or control + V on PC to paste the tag.

Withdraw from Coinbase to Ledger

Go to Coinbase.com

  1. Click on the Kucoin tab on your browser to go back to Kucoin.
  2. Click on “Sign in” in the top right.
  3. Type your email address (the one you previously used to sign up for a Coinbase account.)
  4. Press the tab button on your keyboard. Then, type your password. Click the SIGN IN button.

5. You may be asked to complete an image finding task such as “Select all chimneys”. In this case, click on each of the images in the image set with a chimney. Then, click on the submit button.

6. Finally, check the authentication app on your phone to get the six-digit Coinbase authentication code. Type the six-digit authentication code into the text field on your computer’s browser. Then, click on the VERIFY button.

7. You should immediately see your portfolio balance. Scroll down to find the specific cryptocurrency that you want to withdraw to your Ledger. Make sure it has the balance that you expect. While cryptocurrencies such as XRP can take as little as ten minutes to transfer, others such as Bitcoin can take up to an hour or more. You can’t withdraw the money if it is not in the account.

Note: Unlike Kucoin, Coinbase does not have a separate Trading Account and Main Account. It just has a portfolio which shows all of your cryptocurrencies including the ones that you don’t have yet that you can purchase or transfer to Coinbase. (XRP cannot be purchased on Coinbase it must be transferred.)

After Coinbase Login

8. Click the “Send/Receive” button in the top right.

9. Click on the “Send” tab in the dialog box.

10. Check the symbol next to the “Pay with” prompt. If it is the symbol of the cryptocurrency that you want to send to your Ledger, you don’t have to change it. However, if it is not the cryptocurrency that you want to send, click on the “Pay with” prompt. You will see a list of cryptocurrencies. Click on the one that you want to send to your Ledger, or search for it by typing the name of the cryptocurrency in the search bar, and click on the cryptocurrency that you want to send.

11. Now, click the “Send all” button or type in the value in dollars that you want to send. In the top right of the dialog box, you can also click on the cryptocurrency name, and type the amount in that cryptocurrency, or click the “Send all” button and it will dipslay all of that cryptocurrency you have that is available to send.

Warning: You will likely need to send less than all to pay the Coinbase fee for sending the cryptocurrency. Sending the cryptocurrency may fail the first time if you attempt to send all and don’t have crypto left over for paying the substantial Coinbase fees.

Ledger Instructions

  1. Plug in your Ledger with the USB-C cable that came with it.

2. The ledger has a left and right buttons and a display. The right button makes the number in the selected digit increase by one, and the left button makes the number decrease by one. It also has an X and a checkmark in the up or down digit sequence. When the digit of your Ledger code is correct, press both the right and left buttons at the same time, and the code shown on the display will move to the next digit. Go through digit-by-digit until the code is correct. You should probably memorize this code. It can be as few as four digits and as many as eight. Mine is eight.

3. Open the Ledger Live software on you computer. On the side menu, click “Receive.”

4. In the dialog box that appears, you will see Account to credit, and the name of the cryptocurrency with a number next to it. I just have one account with XRP cryptocurrency, so it says “XRP 1.”

Warning: You must have the right cryptocurrency!!! It will have a list of the cryptocurrency software that you installed on your Ledger. If you have not installed the software for this specific cryptocurrency on your Ledger, you will not be able to receive it from Coinbase or any other exchange or wallet.

5. Click the “Continue” button.

From the Ledger

6. Now you will have to check your Ledger to see if the XRP app is loaded on the device. If you have taken too long, you may have to redo your Ledger code and go back to step 2 in the Ledger instructions above.

7. if you see on the Ledger display, open the app for the cryptocurrency, press both buttons on your Ledger.

8. Check that the address displayed on the Ledger is exactly the same as the address displayed in the Ledger Live program on you computer. Click on the right button on the ledger to see more and more of the address in the display.

9. On the Ledger Live program, click on the copy icon next to the address to copy the address to the clipboard. Then, press both buttons on the Ledger device to confirm that it is showing the correct address.

Go back to Coinbase

1. Click on the Coinbase tab in your browser.

Note: If your sign in has timed-out, you may have to login again. If, you are no longer logged in, go back to step 2 in the Coinbase instructions.

2. After going through the Coinbase instructions, select the text field next to “Address.” Press command + V on Mac or control + V on PC to paste the Ledger address.

3. It will ask you if you are sure that the address does not require a tag for the cryptocurrency, for Ledger, it does not. Click on the button, “Yes I’m sure.”

4. Check the authentication app on you phone and type in the six-digit Coinbase code.

5. Click on the “Confirm” button.

Note: A dialog box should appear that says that the transfer was successful. If it is not, and you attempted to send all of the cryptocurrency, you may not have had enough to pay the Coinbase withdrawal fees. Lower the amount by at least 1.5%. This should be enough for the fees. Attempt again with a lower amount if it fails.
